After months of planning and discussion the Ipswich City Council proposed a development known as the Riverheart Precinct which would turn the Bremer River, which runs through Ipswich, into the focal point of the city.
On the Southern banks of the Riverheart Precinct are the parklands, riverside broadwalk and unique light and water displays.[2] On the northern bank of the river is the Riverlink Shopping Centre.
The land occupied by the Riverlink development had previously been untouchable, belonging to the public owning of the railway depot and the former gasworks site. An extensive clean up had to be conducted before any construction on the new 52,000m2 shopping centre could begin.
There has been strong interest in turning the old railway bridge which links the northern and southern banks of the Bremer River into a pedestrian bridge, in order to link the new shopping centre with the current mall. However, at this stage no formalised plans have been announced.
Riverlink is divided by a train line into two areas, Riverlink West and the smaller Riverlink East. Major Stores in Riverlink East include Aldi, BCF, Officeworks and Pillow Talk. Major Stores in Riverlink West include Coles, Kmart, Target, Woolworths and JB Hi-Fi.[3]
From the Ipswich Train Station, the 515 Riverlink Bus 504 service provides the closest stop.
